21st
Century Organics has done considerable research into this complicated
issue (made more complicated by ignorance) and the result is great news
for those suffering with ADD. Let's start at the beginning.
People
diagnosed with ADD typically have short attention spans, low energy,
are mostly unfocused and disorganized, as well as often suffer from
frequent negative thoughts and excessive guilt. They are usually misdiagnosed
with clinical depression, but often find that antidepressants only increase
their moodiness.
ADD
has its roots in various systems in the brain, but is most readily addressed
when understood from a holistic point of view. For example, ADD is associated
with low dopamine levels in the brain. Furthermore, mood problems can
occur when the limbic system of the brain is overactive. The limbic
system is about the size of a walnut and lies near the center of the
brain and is the part of the brain that helps determine how positive
or negative you are in your outlook, and also affects motivation and
drive. It controls the sleep and appetite cycles of the body, and affects
the "bonding mechanism" that enables you to connect with other
people on a social level, which in turn influences your moods. Furthermore,
low serotonin levels are causal factors in many ADD cases. The
point here is that all these various factors are addressable and manageable
through health decisions and dietary modifications.
Our
deep limbic system needs a balanced diet containing protein, "good
fats" and carbohydrates to function properly. That means including
healthy fats (such as the omega-3
fatty acids found in fish), complex carbohydrates (which increase
serotonin levels) and protein in every meal. The right foods also cause
dopamine and serotonin to be released which in turn improves focus,
mood and reduces ADD symptoms. Most effective is the right supplementation,
which can directly target the core of the issue and help solve much
of the concomitant problems.
This
is where we started when we looked into addressing the dietary aspect
of ADD. In understanding the causes, we can choose supplements that
greatly assist in balancing our natural systems. This is a far cry from
pharmaceutical remedies, which can solve one problem only to cause a
myriad of others, not to mention the addictive and harmful aspects.
For
example, Ritalin is a Schedule II stimulate, structurally and pharmacologically
similar to amphetamines and cocaine and has the same dependency profile
of cocaine and other stimulants. Here is a list of known side-effects
from Ritalin: increased blood pressure, heart rate, respirations and
temperature; appetite suppression, weight loss, growth retardation;
facial tics, muscle twitching, central nervous system stimulation, euphoria,
nervousness, irritability and agitation, psychotic episodes, violent
behavior, paranoid delusions, hallucinations, bizarre behaviors, heart
arrhythmias, palpitations and high blood pressure; tolerance and psychological
dependence and death.
Here's
a story from one of our studies: Carol's 13 year old boy was struggling
with ADD. He was taking Ritalin but Carol said the medicines were not
controlling the ADD properly. When it did seem to help, it had adverse
effects that worried her, including trouble sleeping, stomach problems,
occassional serious mood swings or rebound affects. She took him off
the drugs as soon as she saw him starting to develop tics. She had done
enough research to know the benefits of stimulant therapy, but clearly
the pharmaceuticals were not the answer in her child's case.
Instead
of using intensely powerful drugs on still developing children, we gathered
all the natural organics that had proven results in addressing this
ailment and studied them with respect to using them collectively to
assist with the ADD issue in a healthier, safer way.
An
example: the calming effect of serotonin can often be felt simply by
eating carbohydrate-containing foods, such as pastas, potatoes, bread,
pretzels, and popcorn, as well as foods rich in tryptophan, such as
chicken, turkey, salmon, beef, peanut butter, eggs, green peas, potatoes
and milk. Dopamine can be boosted through L-Tyrosine intake, or organics
like Macuna Pruriens. A simple cup of tea can provide enough stimulant
to positively affect attention and energy, especially green or white
tea.
So
we brought together the right balance of natural ingredients to co-operatively
assist in critical areas associated with attention disorders. We call
it ELEVERA and it's a healthy holistic approach to improving your attention,
energy, focus, mood and brain health. It is an effective nutritional
supplement that may help with either A or B ADD.
